Understanding Pain

Pain is an essential, protective response that alerts our body to potential harm. It’s an important warning signal that helps prevent injury and prompts us to adjust our behaviour. However, pain becomes chronic when it persists beyond the usual healing time, lasting more than three months. Unlike acute pain, which is a direct response to injury or damage, chronic pain is no longer a protective mechanism. It can occur without visible tissue damage and often remains long after an injury has healed.
Chronic pain is a widespread issue. In fact, it’s the second most common reason people seek medical help and miss work. It can be mild or severe, episodic or continuous, and its effects can be physically and emotionally draining. Conditions like headaches, back pain, joint pain, tendonitis, and even repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome can all fall under the category of chronic pain.
The Brain and Pain
It’s crucial to understand that pain is not just a physical sensation; it’s a complex experience created by your brain. The brain interprets various signals from the body and determines whether it perceives a threat. This perception of danger triggers the sensation of pain. Importantly, pain does not always require tissue damage to be felt. For example, you might experience pain even if there is no injury present, or you may not feel pain despite having significant tissue damage.
This insight into how pain is processed by the brain has profound implications for pain management. Just because you feel pain doesn’t mean your body is damaged, and just because you don’t feel pain doesn’t mean you are injury-free. Chronic pain often persists due to the brain continuing to perceive a threat, even in the absence of an ongoing injury.
Chiropractic Care Helps with Chronic Pain
Chiropractic care is an effective approach to addressing chronic pain, as it focuses on improving spinal function and restoring proper movement to the body. The spine plays a critical role in how the brain perceives and processes pain signals. Misalignments or dysfunctions in the spine can cause the brain to receive inaccurate information, contributing to the experience of pain. By improving spinal movement and alignment, chiropractic adjustments help the brain to process more accurate signals, which can reduce pain and improve overall function.
In particular, chiropractic care has been shown to be highly effective in treating conditions like back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Research consistently supports the benefits of chiropractic adjustments in managing musculoskeletal pain and improving mobility, often providing relief when other treatments have failed.
Retraining Your Brain to Reduce Pain
While chiropractic care is a valuable part of managing chronic pain, it’s important to recognise that pain is also influenced by psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and emotions. The brain is highly responsive to these factors, which means that how you think and feel about your pain can affect the intensity and duration of your symptoms.
One of the most effective ways to manage chronic pain is by retraining the brain. The key to this is staying active, maintaining a positive mindset, and engaging in behaviours that promote healing. Here are some practical tips:
- Stay Active: Even if you experience pain, gentle movement can help reprogramme the brain and reduce the intensity of the pain. Activities like walking, swimming, or yoga can improve mobility and prevent stiffness, while helping the brain learn that movement isn’t dangerous.
- Positive Emotions: Your emotional state can have a significant impact on your pain. Feeling stressed or negative can make pain feel more intense, while engaging in positive emotions like gratitude and joy can reduce pain perception.
- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Eating well and ensuring proper sleep are vital for overall health and pain management. When your body is nourished and well-rested, it’s better equipped to cope with pain and promote healing.
Chiropractic Care and Your Spinal Health
At Thame Chiropractic Clinic, we focus on helping you achieve optimal spinal health to relieve chronic pain and restore your body’s natural movement. Chiropractic adjustments not only alleviate pain but also help retrain the brain to process pain signals more effectively. By enhancing spinal mobility and addressing any misalignments or restrictions, chiropractic care helps improve the brain’s understanding of your body’s needs and promotes lasting pain relief.
Additionally, chiropractic care can help prevent future pain by promoting healthy posture and movement patterns. By correcting any spinal misalignments and ensuring that your body moves properly, chiropractic care plays a key role in long-term pain management and overall well-being.

Initially uncertain as to how Arthur could help me, it turns out, after my initial plan was completed, I had gained back an inch in height! It has been very helpful. They are all very experienced at the clinic and it is well worth getting your back looked at. I now realise how much your vertebral nerves can cause so many issues with other parts of your body/organs. Fascinating. Thank you.

Very friendly well organised small business.
An assessment of the spine was done before any treatment got underway, there after a programme of regular treatments have slowly improved some spinal and neck issues.
