CHARITABLE CAUSES

During a memorable trip to Sofia, Bulgaria, my wife and I had a touching encounter that inspired us to get involved in charitable causes focused on animal welfare. Our story begins with a sweet, intelligent street dog we encountered and later named “Sofia.”

An Encounter in Sofia

Sofia, the street dog, captured our hearts almost immediately. She wasn’t just an ordinary stray; there was something special about her demeanor and intelligence. From the moment we crossed paths, she began to follow us through the city, staying close for nearly two hours. Her behavior was astonishing – she would stop at traffic lights, guide us through underpasses to cross busy streets, and patiently wait beside us before stepping into traffic. It was clear that she had learned to navigate the city in a way that showed remarkable awareness and caution.

As we continued to walk, Sofia stayed by our side. Whenever we took a break, she would sit beside us, as if to ensure that we were safe in this unfamiliar city. At one point, we tried to lose her, fearing we might cause her harm by letting her get attached. But when we hid behind parked cars, she became visibly stressed. Our hearts ached for this devoted dog, and when we finally revealed ourselves again, the joy on her face was palpable.

A Heart Breaking Goodbye

Eventually, we noticed Sofia was growing tired. We sat down on a sidewalk, and she lay down next to my wife, Maria, resting her head on Maria’s feet. We waited until she fell asleep before attempting to leave. Maria was in tears as we walked away, and I was no different. We felt helpless, unsure of how to properly care for this dog that had left such an impact on us. In this picture, you can see Sofia left behind and my poor wife, her face marked with tears. It was a poignant moment that we couldn’t shake off.

Returning to Sofia, Bulgaria – Searching for Sofia

After four days, we returned to Sofia, the city, and immediately searched for Sofia, the dog. We wandered through the same streets, revisiting the places we had walked with her, but to no avail. Sofia had disappeared. It was then that we decided to visit the largest animal rescue organization in the city, hoping to find some answers or comfort.

Our visit to the rescue center was eye-opening. We were overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need and the challenges the rescue faced in providing care. The staff worked tirelessly, but it was clear they required more resources to address the vast need. While we couldn’t take Sofia home with us, we realized we could still make a difference by supporting this charitable cause.

Supporting Local Animal Charities in Bulgaria

Moved by what we saw, we decided that the best way to honor Sofia was to support the rescue center in its mission. Since then, we have been regular donors to this wonderful organization, contributing what we can to help street animals receive the care and shelter they deserve. The funds support veterinary care, food, shelter, and the efforts to find loving homes for these animals. It’s our way of giving back and helping the many Sofias still wandering the streets of Bulgaria.
